DES MOINES - Two state Republican leaders are challenging a
decision to turn away hundreds of low-income families who need child-
care assistance.
The state is running out of money for such aid, forcing the Iowa
Department of Human Services to put families on a waiting list
beginning Monday, department officials said.
Iowa House Speaker Brent Siegrist, R-Council Bluffs, said money
is available to avoid the waiting lists. Siegrist and state Rep.
Dave Heaton, R-Mount Pleasant, who chairs a state human-services
budget committee, said $13 million in leftover federal grants ought
to be used for the program.
Siegrist and Heaton said the money is left in the bank and has
not been used.
