Article: U.S. to test Japan-bound corn for unapproved grain; StarLink:The country imports about 16 million metric tons of corn from the United States

WASHINGTON (AP) - Corn being shipped to Japan to be used in food will be tested for the presence of StarLink grain, the gene-altered variety that slipped into the U.S. food supply without being approved for human consumption, said the Agriculture Department.

As the largest foreign buyer of U.S. corn, Japan accepted the testing plans on Friday, said Tim Galvin, administrator of USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service.

The testing will provide "assurances that it's not going to find its way into the food supply in Japan," Galvin said.
