South West MEP Giles Chichester has been cleared of profiting from channeling EU funds through a company he helped run.

The Conservative hit the headlines in June when it emerged more than pounds400,000 had been paid to the firm, leading to a probe by EU watchdogs.

The money was paid to Francis Chichester Limited for secretarial and assistant services for the European Parliament, constituency and committee work, in breach of a rule banning the practice when a family firm was involved.

The contract for the arrangement had been formally registered with the European Parliament authorities.
