There's a special, unpolished feeling about Walden Pond Books, and it's not the Oakland store's huge inventory that spills onto the sidewalk. It's the creaking wooden floor.

Walk through this book emporium at 3316 Grand Ave. and the boards beneath your feet sound of history, survival and all good things new and used. This isn't some sterile chain bookstore where you can eat off the front counter and see your reflection in the tiled floor.

Walden Pond Books has lived a bit, and its weathered wooden look creates a comfortable atmosphere for browsing through tons of books as you saunter between the tall stacks.
