SCOTTISH club Melrose and famous schools Edinburgh Academy and
Merchiston Castle are bidding with giants of the game such as Jonah
Lomu and Jean-Pierre Rives to earn a place in the International
Rugby Board's hall of fame.
No Scottish player or club has been inducted into the hall of
fame since it was launched in Glasgow two years ago, but this year
Scotland has two strong candidates in the 19th century category.
Melrose RFC and Ned Haig, the butcher who invented sevens at the
Greenyards in 1877, have been nominated alongside Edinburgh Academy
and Merchiston Castle School, due to the annual fixture between the
Edinburgh schools being considered the longest-running game in world
