Mayor Darwin Hindman and councilmen Chris Janku of the Second Ward and John Coffman of the Sixth Ward would not be going to visit sister city Matto City, Japan, as planned.

Matto City Mayor Kumeo Hosokawa had visited Columbia and invited the Columbians to come to Japan. In addition, the mayor's wife, Axie Hindman, and city Cultural Affairs Director Martha Hills planned to join the trio at their own expense.

The problem?

Mayor Hosokawa had been taken into custody and questioned by police for allegedly taking bribes in connection with a public works project.

Hindman said Columbia's 10-year relationship with Matto City would continue.
