Indiana officially became a battleground state in the contest for
the presidency on Tuesday, with the Republican National Committee
airing a television commercial in the state on behalf of John
McCain, and Barack Obama's supporters calling local news conferences
to dispute it.
"This race is competitive, and I know Obama thinks he can win in
Indiana," said Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel, a Democrat and Obama
supporter.
Depending on the poll, Obama either was slightly ahead or a hair
behind McCain on Tuesday in Indiana, which has been colored red for
Republican on national political maps for decades.
