Whatever the impact of Thursday night's vice presidential debate
on this election, Sarah Palin is clearly the second-biggest TV
personality to come out of the 2008 campaign, right after Barack
Obama.
She demonstrated the folksy charm that forms a cornerstone of
that on-camera persona with a friendly "Can I call you Joe?" as she
shook hands with her Democratic opponent, Sen. Joe Biden, at the
opening of the debate.
The Alaska governor's first prime-time national speech, when she
accepted the Republican nomination just a month ago, demonstrated an
understanding of the value of the down-home sound bite as she
introduced herself as a hockey mom.
