An Exeter University boss is behind new national plans to encourage more poorer students to continue their studies.

Universities have been told they can make lower offers to students from poorer backgrounds if they show great potential, which already happens in Exeter.

Vice chancellor Professor Steve Smith helped write the report for the National Committee for Educational Excellence, which argues universities should take more "contextual" information about applicants' backgrounds into account.
