But to locals and those prepared to venture just off the tourist track, the inner portion of Exeter Road is a half-mile parade of independent traders and facilities of the kind that form the backbone of a successful local community.

And if there is one aspect of both halves that everybody we spoke to remarked upon, it's the friendliness of the natives.

One long-standing local landmark is Lakes greengrocers, owned by Pam and Neil Blake for the past 10 years.
