South West livestock representatives are visiting Brussels this
week to help establish a protected food name for the region's beef
and lamb.
After almost three years of work by Meat South West, the European
Commission is considering an application for Protected Geographical
Indication - a status which would protect and promote the region's
traditional livestock practices which make its beef and lamb so
unique.
"Meat South West believes this application is vitally important
to the South West red meat industry," said Meat South West manager
Helen Ashcroft. "The PGI would give the South West a unique selling
point and great marketing opportunities within Europe."
