Brush a loaf tin with butter. Peel, core and slice the apples.
Cover the base of the tin with half the apple slices, sprinkle half
the Demerara sugar over, then arrange the rest of the apple slices
on top and sprinkle with the remaining Demerara sugar.
Peel, core and slice the pears and arrange evenly in an ovenproof
dish. Sprinkle over two tablespoons of water, and then sprinkle over
the sultanas and the caster sugar.
N OW that the undeniable temperatures and colours of autumn are
upon us and winter is fast approaching (meaning that Christmas is
only ten weeks away) it is time once again to give the family some
