Tonight marks the opening of Christchurch's Repertory Theatre
Company's 400th production.
84 Charing Cross Road is James Roose-Evans' 1981 adaptation of
Helene Hanff's 1970 book about the friendship that developed between
her and Frank Doel, the chief buyer for Marks and Co (the
antiquarian bookshop housed at the title address).
A New Yorker, Hanff was on the hunt for obscure classics and
British literature that Doel did his very best to track down for
her. She first contacted the shop in 1949 when she noticed an ad in
the Saturday Review of Literature. The friendship they built
extended to other staff members. Birthday and Christmas gifts were
