WEST Virginia appears to have gone from "no way" Barack Obama to "in play."

A few weeks ago it appeared Obama had about as much chance of winning the state as former Mountaineer football coach Rich Rodriguez had of being named "West Virginian of the year."

Obama was coming off a 41-point loss to Hillary Clinton in the primary election and showing no sign of any interest in West Virginia.

Polling showed McCain with a comfortable lead, and every major polling organization had West Virginia either "solid" or "leaning" McCain.

Even West Virginia Democratic Party leaders privately conceded there was no way that West Virginia, with its conservative values, would vote for Obama.
