Given that one in nine women will have breast cancer in their
lifetime, it's no wonder Exeter's breast cancer care unit is so
busy.
It deals with nearly 500 new cases each year, as well as helping
women who already have the disease.
Each of these women will have seen one of a team of five breast
cancer nurses who support patients from diagnosis onward at the
Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital.
Joan Cooper, lead breast cancer nurse specialist, said: "Our main
focus is the support of women and their families following the
diagnosis of breast cancer. It encompasses three main areas: support
and information, education and research and audit. It is more than
just patient contact.
