Don't lower drinking age Making it legal for 18-year-olds to imbibe would increase already serious problem for high schools.

The more than 100 college presidents, including six in Connecticut, who want the drinking age dropped to 18 are trying to wish a problem away by passing it on to others. A study by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University estimated that a quarter of all alcoholic beverages are consumed by people between the ages of 12 and 20. That group includes far more than college students.

Underaged drinking flourishes on many college campuses, sheltered from police intrusions, and is supported by nearby bars and liquor stores.
