Bath kick-started their Heineken Cup campaign with a narrow victory but they were hanging on at the end against Newport Gwent Dragons.

The Guinness Premiership side crossed the whitewash only once when replacement winger Andrew Higgins touched down on 71 minutes.

But they were almost made to pay for not taking their chances with the Dragons, who refused to throw in the towel, deserving of a losing bonus point.

Bath are now third behind the Dragons on try difference but head for back-to-back matches with bottom club Glasgow in December.
