Article: Walnut Creek increases traffic impact fees

The cost to build in Walnut Creek just went up.

The City Council voted Tuesday to increase traffic impact fees -- as much as 77 percent for some types of building. Along with the increased fees, the council adopted a list of 28 improvements and projects -- totalling more than $39 million -- that could be paid for, in part, with the fees.

Traffic impact fees must be used to help relieve the added demand on cities caused by new development.

To entice developers building office projects, the city will also now give a discount for those types of projects. Previously, the city had only discounted retail-project fees.
