Dutch central bank predicts zero economic growth next year

BRUSSELS, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- A senior official of the Dutch central bank said Friday the Dutch economy may book zero growth or even a contraction next year, Dutch paper NRC Handelsblad reported.

Henk Brouwer, director of the Dutch central bank, told a meeting of the Social and Economic Council in The Hague on Friday that "very little growth" should not be ruled out for 2010.

It is the first time that the central bank has released a prognosis which is substantially lower than the one used by the government. The Dutch government based its 2009 spending plans on economic growth of 1.25 percent.
