An alarm company's contract to provide a manned response to fire
alerts was cancelled just a month before a blaze tore through Weston-
super-Mare's historic pier, it has been revealed.
On July 2 this year, a fire alarm signal was transmitted to a
private monitoring company from the resort's Grand Pier at 1.35am,
but a call was not received by Avon and Somerset Fire and Rescue
Service until 6.45am.
A report into the cause of the fire was released yesterday and
firefighters say they may have saved the structure if those vital
five hours had not been lost.
It has been revealed that a contract with System 2 Security,
based in Locking Road, Weston-super-Mare, to send a person to the
