It was the hub of Duxbury life, both religious and secular,
during an exciting time in Colonial history.
Today, little remains of the Second Meeting House. It served the
town from 1706 to 1785, but apparently was demolished as soon as it
was no longer needed. The building materials, even most of the stone
foundation, were carted away for use elsewhere.
For the past two weeks, however, pieces of this important symbol
of Duxbury's past have been literally resurfacing.
Each day, more than 40 volunteers, ranging in age from young home-
schoolers to retirees, set aside their daily activities to search
for history. Crews carefully scraped through layers of soil on a
