Article: WORLD WAR II VETERANS MEMORIAL: ; East Bank to honor the 'greatest generation'

Sixty-seven years ago, East Bank went to war.

Like residents of many small towns across America, after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, and America declared war on Japan and her ally Germany, East Bank's sons, fathers and brothers joined the military. One hundred twenty-four of the town's men would ultimately fight in the conflict.

One was Harry L. Macleery. Now living in California, Macleery joined the U.S. Navy in 1943. He served in the Pacific, where he was one of 14 men on a landing craft ferrying troops and supplies to shore under fire during the invasion of Leyte in 1944.

Scary?

"You'd better believe it," said Macleery, 82. "I wouldn't want to go through it again."
