The late Rachel Carson's name has been synonymous with the modern
environmental movement, and beginning today it will also be a new
presence along the centerpiece of Maryland's ecosystem.
A new Chesapeake Bay research vessel, the Rachel Carson, will be
christened at 10 a.m. at City Dock this morning in honor of Ms.
Carson, who studied at Johns Hopkins University, taught at the
University of Maryland, and authored "Silent Spring," the famous
book warning about pesticides.
First Lady Katie O'Malley will break the ceremonial champagne
bottle across the bow of the 81-foot, $4.6 million research vessel
for the University of Maryland's Center for Environmental Science.
