Article: Increase in paper ballots, 'fried' card cause delays

TROY -- Miami County's Board of Elections planned and planned for the Nov. 4 presidential election, adding voting machines and staff and meeting weekly for a month before the big day.

Still, the board, staff and volunteers were wrapping up ballot counting at 4 a.m. Nov. 5.

Processing paper ballots -- offered by a secretary of state order as an option to touch screen voting machines -- delayed release of results first.

"We got lots more paper than we anticipated," said Roger Luring, elections board chairman. "We are running two systems now."

Then, with just a few hundred paper ballots to count, a memory card (in the words of Luring) "fried."
