IT IS probably the most important addition to the new White House team as America's next First Family prepares for the ultimate domestic upheaval.

Michelle Obama's mother has agreed reluctantly to leave her lifelong home, a modest bungalow on Chicago's South Side, and move to Washington to help to smooth the transition for the granddaughters who dote on her.

The nation's new First Granny is Marian Robinson, 71, a fiercely independent figure who regularly made the 10-minute journey to the Obama home to look after Malia, 10, and Sasha, seven, while their parents were campaigning.
