SO, to what do we attribute Labour's unexpected glorious success
and the SNP's failure in the Glenrothes by-election? Was it the
world recession making Gordon Brown appear not such a bad option?
Was it the fear that icy winds would blow through an independent
Scotland like they have through Iceland?
I think it was Scottish secretary Jim Murphy's intervention last
week on behalf of the Stornoway black pudding which swung the vote
in Labour's favour.
Murphy's pledge as secretary of state to gain protected species
status via the European Commission for the Hebridean marag dubh was
just the sort of inspired populist initiative we have come to expect
of Alex Salmond's SNP.
