BACK in September, Elbow were deservedly named winners of the
2008 Mercury Music Prize; but which other contenders were really in
the running? Radiohead, British Sea Power and Estelle certainly.
Burial, Neon Neon and Adele perhaps. But for the folk and jazz
contingent, year in, year out, just getting on the shortlist is
victory in itself. At least Milo Fitzpatrick, double-bass player
with young post-jazzers Portico Quartet, was able to take it all in
his stride.
"Getting nominated was wicked, " he admits. "I just wanted to
enjoy the ride because, basically, you feel like you've won already.
