Article: Arizona Dept. of Transportation wants to build freeway near Phoenix South Mountain Park

Harold and Crystal Nelson can see Phoenix South Mountain Park from their front porch. The entire 16,000-acre preserve sits just across a small dirt road, officially known as 43rd Avenue.

A lot of animals -- coyotes, quail, javelina and even bats -- wander in from the park.

"We love it," says Harold Nelson, 55.

The Nelson home is among a handful in Dusty Lane, a small wedge of a community with a Laveen mailing address.

From their front porch, the Nelsons can see the park's San Juan Valley, caught between two parallel ridges. The valley is covered with creosote, ironwood trees and the occasional saguaro. It's quiet, except for the wind chimes rustling in a small breeze.
