Monty, a 3-year-old quintessential "shelter mutt," has markings
and genetic traits that led the Humane Society of Baltimore County
to surmise that she came from a commingling of pit bull terrier,
golden retriever and Labrador retriever breeds.
Trying to figure out the makeup of mixed-breed dogs like Monty
and her shelter mate Matix, -- whose long, low-slung body has him
labeled a dachshund-beagle mix -- is a mixture of experience and
guesswork. According to the U.S. Humane Society, in most shelters
there are fewer than 25 percent "purebred" dogs up for adoption. The
rest are mixed-breed dogs whose background remains a mystery.
