Article: Sylvia Allen retains Arizona's District 5 Senate seat

The rancher Bill Jeffers was off to a good, if not late, start in his campaign to put the District 5 Senate seat in the Democratic column.

He needed only 386 write-in votes to qualify as a candidate. He blew past that -- garnering 2,371 write-ins.

The Democrats also have a registration advantage in the northern Arizona district. But the momentum fell short.

When the dust settled, Republican Sen. Sylvia Allen fended off a challenge from Jeffers over the seat long held by iconic lawmaker Jake Flake, who died earlier this year.
