Article: Unrealistic customers hurting auctioneers in Maryland

It should be a boom time for auction firms as more and more people turn to them to sell residential and commercial properties, but auctioneers are finding themselves in the unenviable position of turning away potential customers unwilling to accept today's pricing realities.

"For every one deal we're taking, we're turning down probably 10," said Daniel M. Billig, a partner at A.J. Billig & Co., Auctioneers in Baltimore. "We're only taking the stuff we think we have a market for."

According to the National Auctioneers Association, the number of real estate auctions grew 46.6 percent between 2003 and 2007, with more than $58.5 billion in real estate assets sold last year alone.
