Article: Norton Simon has new leading 'Lady'

PASADENA - A small luminous Vermeer masterpiece - one of only 35 in the world - went on display Thursday at the Norton Simon Museum.

On a three-month loan from the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., "A Lady Writing," circa 1665, is the first painting to come to the Norton Simon in a bicoastal exchange program established last year with the National Gallery and The Frick Collection in New York City.

"Our choice was Vermeer - how could it not be?" said Carol Togneri, the Norton Simon's chief curator.

No other work by the Dutch master is on public view on the West Coast, Togneri said, and the painting's arrival in Pasadena is expected to generate considerable buzz.
