Wisconsin sided with history Tuesday, backing Democrat Barack Obama in his dramatic, door-opening run to the White House.

In doing so, the state followed one longstanding pattern -- voting Democratic in every race since 1984 -- and bucked another: This time, the margin wasn't razor thin.

With 62% of precincts reporting late Tuesday, Obama had 56% of the vote, compared with 42% for Republican John McCain. The remainder went to other candidates.

An exit poll found Obama won among key groups, including voters age 18-29 (Obama had 64%), those making less than $50,000 a year (65%) and those calling themselves political moderates (63%) and independents (58%).
