"Casino Royale," which introduced Daniel Craig as James Bond, hit
you in the face like the first blast of winter.
It made your eyes water and your pulse beat faster, and you felt
a little dirtier when it was over.
It was a violent shock to the system of a long-running formula
that was in dire need of one.
The viscerally compelling but oddly titled new Bond film "Quantum
of Solace" is all that, but less.
The last film had a character-based sense of urgency and
desperation missing in the new film, despite the fact that the
personal traumas and tragedies that informed the character's callous
and violent rebirth linger like scar tissue.
But in "Quantum of Solace," Bond backslides.
