It is difficult to think of a more appropriate individual to
attend the launch of the Somerset county Poppy Appeal than the last
surviving veteran of trench warfare on the Western Front, Somerset-
born Harry Patch.
At 110 years of age, Mr Patch shows no signs of easing back on
his work as an ambassador for the British Legion, whose sterling
efforts ensure the success of the annual appeal. He has become the
living embodiment of our brave First World War fighting men, and
wears the mantle with great dignity.
It was appropriate too that the Devon appeal launch last month
was attended by Marine Ben McBean, who fought in a conflict
separated from the First World War by more than 90 years. ...
