I suppose you could say we are lucky in our household, in that we are protected from the worst excesses of the early build-up to Christmas by the fact that younger daughter has a late November birthday.

Others smugly state that they have done all their Christmas shopping, have addressed every card and have acquired a new holly wreath to go on the front door before the end of October.

We, however, have a rule in our house not even to consider the festive season until the November birthday has been taken care of.

So, apart from the occasional exposure to TV adverts showing those lads from Take That having the jolliest Christmas ever with those girls from Marks and Spencer, or Richard Hammond ...
