A pet rescue centre has been forced to close temporarily after an outbreak of a deadly dog virus.

Staff at the Bath Cats and Dogs Home sealed off the facility on Tuesday after it became apparent several canines were infected with parvo virus.

The disease, which is highly contagious, is spread through direct or indirect contact with faeces and has already claimed the lives of two puppies.

A further two puppies and four dogs have been struck down, and staff are unsure whether they will recover.

Workers at the home are being forced to stick to rigorous disinfection regimes to prevent the disease spreading to any of the remaining 35 dogs at the home.
