The deaths of two Plymouth-based Royal Marines killed in a firefight with insurgents in Afghanistan will "not be in vain", their Commanding Officer has vowed.

Lieutenant Colonel Charlie Stickland of Bickleigh's 42 Commando, today led the tributes to Marines Tony Evans and Georgie Sparks.

The two young marines of J Company died side by side on Thursday on the flight to hospital at Camp Bastion after being targeted by insurgents armed with rocket-propelled grenades.

In tribute to Marine Evans, aged 20, Lt Col Stickland said: "We have lost one of the 'Smiley Boys' of 42 Commando Royal Marines, and his comrades are unwavering that his loss will not be in vain.

"This is a tragic loss."
