A LEGAL wrangle over who should pay to repair a damaged gas pipe which cost tax payers [pounds]780,000 has yet to be resolved - more than 18 months after work was completed.

Darlington Borough Council is still embroiled in a legal dispute with a mystery party over who should foot the repair bill for a 100- year-old gas pipe damaged during the construction of the Pedestrian Heart.

Contractor Birse told The Northern Echo it was not involved in the legal dispute - and the council declined to reveal who it is in talks with.

It also emerged that while discussions are ongoing, no information will be made public, and depending on the outcome, it may remain private.
