Article: Doctors disagree over ways to keep San Leandro Hospital open

SAN LEANDRO -- Every family has its differences of opinion, and the professionals who govern and work at San Leandro Hospital sure disagreed Wednesday over whether the 122-bed hospital can remain open.

Doctors argued, politely, over whether small community hospitals - - such as San Leandro Hospital, owned by the Eden Township Healthcare District -- can compete with Sutter Health and Kaiser Permanente, two of California's giant health care empires.

An Oakland financial consultant told 60 people at a meeting of district directors that San Leandro Hospital's income has lagged behind expenses for years.
