Article: Malls brace for holiday shoppers

The Christmas holiday season that begins on the day after Thanksgiving, Black Friday as it's known in the retail business, is the true make-or-break time for shopping malls. During the rest of the year, they can be places to buy necessities and the occasional gift, but Christmas is when people ratchet up their purchases and pursue shopping as a form of entertainment.

In spite of a struggling economy, the East Bay's five standalone malls say they are hoping sales will increase again this year over the holidays while analysts are forecasting anywhere from a slight increase to an actual decline in sales over the holiday season compared with 2007.
