Article: ReStore warehouse to shutter Dec. 31 ; Business struggles in tough economy

Knowing the end is near, Margaret Crawford, a 69-year-old handywoman, stood in the cool, cavernous Habitat for Humanity warehouse Saturday afternoon.

When the new year hits, doors to the nonprofit's 16,000 square foot ReStore warehouse in St. Joseph's Downtown will permanently close.

For the past three years, Habitat has sold donated new and used construction materials to help its core work of building affordable homes in St. Joseph.

But revenues from the Habitat's side business are drying up. Officials say an unprofitable economy and construction slump have slowed donations and put the warehouse books in the red this year.
