Long after Norman G. Heard sold his family's funeral home in
Observatory Hill and retired, he made a point of meeting with
families who scheduled visitations and services there.
He'd been raised in that section of the North Side and still knew
many of the residents.
"He talked to every family to make sure they were OK. These were
his friends, the people he grew up with and the people he went to
school with," said James Hahn, a funeral director who worked for Mr.
Heard starting in 1974.
Norman G. Heard of Shaler died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008, at age
82. In addition to working more than 30 years as a funeral director,
he was a local spokesman, leader and teacher in the mortuary
industry.
