Dozens of Pittsburgh business groups on Wednesday urged the Port
Authority of Allegheny County and its drivers union to end a labor
dispute that threatens to stop transit service in December.
They want the union to accept a contract proposed in August by a
state-appointed arbitrator, warning that a transit shutdown would
make travel to and from the city a nightmare.
Businesses are encouraging employees to form carpools or to work
from home. Riders are making alternative plans to reach work, stores
and school.
"Pretty much everywhere I go, I take a bus to get there," said
Michael Strathen, an Art Institute of Pittsburgh student from Etna.
