A second baseman had not won the American League most valuable
player award in nearly a half-century, and no AL player had won
rookie of the year and MVP awards in back-to-back seasons in a
quarter-century. But yesterday, Boston's Dustin Pedroia accomplished
both, branding his nascent career a historic one just 27 months into
it.
Pedroia, 25, was named the AL's MVP after receiving 16 of a
possible 28 first-place votes in balloting by members of the
Baseball Writers' Association of America, winning by a comfortable
60-point margin over Minnesota Twins first baseman Justin Morneau,
who received seven first-place votes.
The diminutive Pedroia, who also won the Silver Slugger and Gold
