Writethru: Economists say South Africa obliged to help Zimbabwe

HARARE, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Economists in South Africa have said the country could afford a 2 billion U.S. dollars financial rescue aid for Zimbabwe's economy, local daily newspaper The Herald reported on Tuesday.

However, the current global financial crisis makes it difficult for South Africa to make the bail out single-handedly, the newspaper said.

"South Africa will have to help Zimbabwe until it is ready to go to the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank to ask for credit," Lumkile Mondi, chief economist at South Africa's Industrial Development Corporation was quoted by the newspaper as saying.
