TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks remained volatile Tuesday, with the key Nikkei index briefly falling below the 7,000 line at midmorning for the first time since October 1982.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 67.76 points, or 0.95 percent, from Monday to 7,095.14, after falling to a low of 6,994. 90 at 10:17 a.m. The Nikkei last traded at the 6,000 level in early October 1982. (Japan-stocks)
