XENIA -- The November 2009 election was the most expensive in Greene County history, costing the board of elections roughly $230,000, and pushing the BOE's annual costs $245,000 past the budget approved by the county commissioners.

Costs include renting extra voting machines, training poll workers, providing the option of paper ballots and mailing absentee request forms to every voter in the district.

Much of the costs came from mandates from Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, such as offering voters a paper ballot if they desire one and a specific ratio of voting machines to voters.
