Article: High energy light bulbs facing switch-off in 2012

MOVES by the EU to abolish high-energy light bulbs by the end of 2012 have been hailed by the Government as a boon for the environment and for household budgets.

A expert committee recommended phasing out the traditional classic incandescent light bulbs, starting in September next year with the disappearance of 100-watt bulbs.

"We are delighted that member states have today agreed to get rid of energy wasting light bulbs, saving consumers money and helping reduce their carbon footprint," said a Government spokesman.

"Choosing energy saving light bulbs can help tackle climate change, and also cut household bills, with each bulb saving up to Pounds 60 over its lifetime."
