Reggie and Deena Ethridge had lost control of their family room.

Once a space that adults could freely and comfortably roam without tripping over a game or piece of athletic equipment, the big room with soaring ceilings had become a lost cause for the busy Walpole parents. Their five children - ages 3 to 19 - had claimed it as their own. That left the elder Ethridges with the job of apologizing for the space when friends came calling, or simply shielding it from the gaze of visitors.
